The Padres went 2 and 2 this week. They opened with a loss to the Arizona Diamondbacks, 1-3 on Thursday, July 9, then dropped the first game of a three game series against the Toronto Blue Jays, 3-5, on Friday. But San Diego turned it around, winning 8-7 on Saturday and 5-4 on Sunday to take that series against Toronto two games to one. That's a two game winning streak heading into the break.
The division picture barely moved. San Diego sits 12.5 games back in the National League West, up slightly from 14 back before this stretch, and now ranks third in the division after being second. The Dodgers actually lost ground on everyone, going 0 and 3 this week, while the Diamondbacks went 4 and 0 and the Giants went 3 and 1. In the wild card race, the Padres are 3.5 games back, better than the 4.5 back they were sitting at before, though still ranked seventh.
Manny Machado (3B) was the story of the week at the plate. He hit a home run and drove in a run in that Diamondbacks loss on July 9, and over the four games he went 8 for 16, a .500 average, with a homer and 4 RBI. Ty France (1B) also went deep with 2 RBI in Saturday's win, and Jake Cronenworth (2B) chipped in two hits and two stolen bases that same day.
Now the whole league is paused for the All-Star Game on July 14, so there's nothing else to report the last few days. The Padres last played Sunday, July 12, and they're back in action Friday, July 17 at 5:10 PM against the Kansas City Royals at Kauffman Stadium, a three game series to kick off the second half.
