The Mariners went 1-3 this week, getting outscored 23-15, and it cost them first place. Seattle dropped a single game to the Miami Marlins 4-8 on Thursday, then went to Tampa Bay and lost the first two games of that series to the Rays, 2-7 and 1-6. They salvaged the finale on Sunday, winning 8-2 to close out the trip on a high note.
That stretch let the Texas Rangers pass them. The Rangers went 3-1 this week and now sit atop the American League West, with Seattle a game and a half back in second place. The Mariners are still fine for the wild card, sitting right at the cutoff, but the division lead they had a week ago is gone for now.
Sunday's win was the one to watch. J.P. Crawford (SS) went 3 for 4 with 3 RBI, and Randy Arozarena (LF) hit a home run and drove in 3 as well. Arozarena was the best bat of the week overall, hitting .286 over the four games with 2 home runs and 4 RBI. Dominic Canzone (DH) also went deep, homering with 2 RBI back in Thursday's loss to the Marlins.
No roster moves to report. The league paused for the All-Star break after Sunday's game, with the All-Star Game itself played Tuesday, so there was nothing to watch the last few days. That break runs through Thursday.
The Mariners are back home at T-Mobile Park to open a three game series against the San Francisco Giants on Friday, July 17 at 7:10 PM. That's the next chance to see if they can climb back into first.
