The Blue Jays went 1 and 2 this week, dropping a series to the San Diego Padres down at Petco Park. They took the opener 5-3 on Friday, July 10, but the Padres came back to win 7-8 on Saturday and 4-5 on Sunday. That puts Toronto on a two game losing streak heading into the break, though the last ten games overall sit at an even 5 and 5.
The division picture shifted some while you were gone. Toronto dropped from third to fifth in the American League East, now 12 games back after sitting 11.5 back a week ago. The Tampa Bay Rays lead the division and actually went just 2 and 2 themselves this stretch, so nobody ran away with it. But the Yankees, Red Sox, and Orioles all went a perfect 4 and 0, which is why the Blue Jays lost ground even with a series split against San Diego. The wild card spot is still 2.5 games back, though Toronto slipped from sixth to eighth in that race.
Vladimir Guerrero Jr. (1B) was the best story of the series. He went 2 for 4 with a home run, three RBI, and a stolen base in Saturday's loss, and finished the three games hitting .273 with a homer and four RBI overall. Kazuma Okamoto (3B) also homered with three RBI in Friday's win, and Jonatan Clase (LF) added a homer of his own with two RBI on Saturday.
Now baseball takes a pause for the All-Star Game, which happened Tuesday, July 14. Toronto's last game was that Sunday loss to the Padres, and the Blue Jays are off until they host the Chicago White Sox for a three game series starting Friday, July 17 at 4:15 PM PDT at Rogers Centre.
